Normal Tooth Extraction vs Surgical Tooth Extraction

Oral dental clinic, common oral surgery treatments are:

Normal teeth removal : simple teeth removal that does not involve the need for sutures or impact soft and bone tissue
Surgical teeth removal : tends to be more complex than normal tooth extraction procedure when a tooth has not yet broken through the gum. Your oral surgeon will therefore need to make gum incision to access and remove the affected tooth, Stitches are normally required.

Tooth removal for braces whereby your orthodontist to remove teeth to allow proper teeth alignment. Likewise, if a tooth us unable to erupt through the gums due to lack of space, your dentist may recommend pulling it.
If there is severe infection extending to the pulp that cannot be resolved with root canal theraphy (RCT), it may be recommended for removal to prevent further spread of infection.
Periodontal disease or gum disease can cause teeth to become loose
Baby teeth that does not fall out
3rd molars (wisdom teeth) or teeth impacted against another tooth that can cause potential decay or growth issues

Your oral surgeon or dental specialists discusses with you on diagonses, treatment options and various benefits and risks before arranging for actual oral surgery. Digital x-ray imaging and CT Scans are taken for your oral surgeon in checking for potential complications.

Surgical Tooth Extraction Procedure

1. Treatment Planning & Pick Sedation Options

Before having surgical tooth extractions, your medical and dental history is taken. X-rays or possible CT Scan help your oral surgeon to see the best route to remove the affected tooth. If you have dental anxiety or dental fear, sedation options for pain-free dental treatment may be discussed with your dentist.

You may be required to take certain medications before or after surgery if you have a specific medical condition.

2. Tooth Extraction Process

On the day of surgery, if you have picked moderate or deep sedation options, you would have undergone a health check with pre-prepatory instructions given to you before administering IV sedation or general anesthesia.

If having tooth removal done conventionally, your oral surgeon will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthesia injection and check with you if you are able to feel the area. It is normal to feel pressure whilst your dentist removes the concerned tooth. During removal, you should not feel any pain, just pressure or rocking motion. If you do feel any sensitivity prior or during removal, please raise your hand up or notify your oral surgeon immediately. Your dentist can then re-check to administer more numbing agent.

3. After Surgical Tooth Extraction

There may be some bleeding after teeth removal and your dentist will you to bite down on a piece of gauze for 20-30 minutes and you are requested not to spit for first few hours. The guaze may be changed if it gets overly soaked. Biting on the guaze helps to form a blood clot in the extraction site.

If Nitrous/ laughing gas or general anesthesia is opted, you will be monitored at our dental clinic until you are fully conscious and in a state to return home. Post care instructions is given to you to care for your extracted site.

Care After Tooth Extraction

After teeth removal, there may be a small amount of bleeding 24 hours after the treatment.

Your dentist may administer antibiotics or medications after surgery, please take the medication as prescribed. Typically, your course of antibiotics will need to be completed. For pain relief medications, this may be taken as and when requierd.

Use an ice pack over affected area to reduce swelling placing the pack for 10 minutes over the site and 20 minutes off the aera for the first day.
Soft and cool foods are recommended for the first few days. Hot foods and alcoholic beverages should be avoid during the first 24 hours
Chew food away from the extraction site
Do not use a straw or spit after surgery. This can cause the blood cut to dislodge and delay healing
Avoid brushing directly over the extraction site for the first day
During first day, do not use mouth rinse. After that, you are able to use antiseptic mouth rinses as prescribed to you or warm salt water before bedtime

How long does it take for tooth extraction site to heal?

It normally takes arounf 2 weeks for the tooth extraction site to heal. It can however take 3 to 6 months for the bone and soft tissue to totally heal. A re-check visit is normally made about 7 days after teeth removal to check on healing or for the removal of stitches for surgical teeth removals.

When would I need to call the dentist after tooth removal?

You may feel some pain after tooth removal and the anesthesia or pain medications wears off. It is normally to have some swelling and residual bleeding.
You should however call your dentist :
•if bleeding or pain is becomes more severe
•you get a fever and feel chills
•you feel nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath or chest pain
•there is redness, excessive swelling and/or discharge from extraction site

How much is tooth extaction cost?

Tooth removal cost is based on your case complexity. Normal tooth extractions will normally cost less than having a tooth surgical removed.
At our Thailand dental clinic, normal tooth extraction cost normally range between Normal tooth extraction cost 1,200 to 5,000 baht (estimated USD$40 to $160 per tooth). Surgical tooth extraction cost varies around 6,000 to 12,000 baht (estimated USD$190 to 380 per tooth).
