Dental care for children

Check-ups and cleaning
Checking teeth, gums and how the teeth and jaws are growing, with gentle cleaning and brushing advice.
Fluoride and sealants
Fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel, and sealants to protect the grooves of back teeth.
Fillings and crowns for baby teeth
Tooth-colored fillings, and crowns for badly decayed baby teeth, so they can stay until the adult teeth come through.
Space maintainers
When a baby tooth is lost early, a space maintainer keeps room for the adult tooth.
Mouth guards for sport
A custom mouth guard helps protect teeth during contact and impact sports.
If your child's teeth or bite need orthodontic treatment, our orthodontists can check them, including early treatment for children who are still growing.
Your child's first visit

Bring your child once the first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. Early visits are short and friendly: the dentist looks at the teeth, shows you how to brush them, and answers your questions about feeding, teething and thumb-sucking.
Regular check-ups, about every six months, let the dentist follow how the teeth and jaws develop and treat small problems early.
Is it time for your child's check-up?
Book a visit. The dentist checks your child's teeth, explains what they find and suggests the next steps.
If a tooth is knocked out
For an adult tooth, hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or water, put it back into the socket if you can, and come to the clinic straight away. If you cannot put it back, keep it in milk and bring it with you. Do not put a baby tooth back; bring your child in so the dentist can check the area.
Cost of children's dental care
Fees depend on the treatment your child needs. Your dentist explains the plan and the fee before starting, and the prices page lists our cleaning and prevention fees.
Prices on our prices page are shown as ranges. Your final fee depends on what the examination finds, and may include additional items — such as a rubber dam or special materials — when your treatment needs them. Your dentist explains these before treatment.
Children's dentistry FAQs
When should my child first see a dentist?
Once the first tooth appears, or by your child's first birthday. Early visits help find problems early and let your child get used to the dentist.
Do baby teeth need fillings if they will fall out?
Often, yes. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth and help with chewing and speech, and untreated decay can cause pain and infection. Your dentist explains the options for each tooth.
How can I help my child feel comfortable?
Talk about the visit in a positive, simple way and start with short check-ups. The dentist explains each step to your child, and you can stay in the room.
How much fluoride toothpaste should my child use?
Under three: a thin smear, about the size of a grain of rice, with an adult brushing. From three to six: a pea-sized amount. Teach children to spit out, not swallow, the toothpaste.
What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?
For an adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly if dirty, put it back or keep it in milk, and come to the clinic straight away. Do not put a baby tooth back; bring your child in so the area can be checked.
How much does a child's check-up cost?
Fees depend on the treatment your child needs. Your dentist explains the plan and the fee before starting.
